In yet another act of outrage, an assistant professor working in one of the reputed engineering colleges in Hyderabad, Mallareddy at Petbasheerabad, allegedly raped a student inside a laboratory on the college campus on Monday, police said on Tuesday.
According to the police, the 30-year-old Venkataiah who works as an assistant professor and lab-in-charge got arrested by Petbasheerabad police. The victim, who is in her late teens is studying the second year BTech said that she went to the lab after the accused called her. When she entered the room, the accused reportedly locked the door and assaulted her.
The girl was leaving her classroom on Monday evening, she received a message on WhatsApp from the accused, asking her to meet him in the lab. Even as she tried to resist, he overpowered her. Though she raised an alarm, it went unheard as most of the students had already left the college by then.
After receiving the complaint, the victim had sent for medical examination and the police arrested the accused. The police said that Venkataiah has confessed to the crime after questioning. The police said that Venkataiah has been working in the geology department for the last three years. Recently he became the in-charge of the lab. It was also found that in the past too, he made advances towards the victim, but she ignored them.
