India chased down the target of 204 against New Zealand in the first T20I sparing an over at Eden Park in Auckland to record their highest successful overseas chase in T20I cricket. India went 1-0 in the five T20I series.
New Zealand once again proved why they are the toughest in their home conditions as both the openers went on taking Indian bowlers to bash. They scored 80 together in just 8 over and then the most experienced Taylor and Williamson took the baton from. At one stage it looked like 230+ score is on course as these veterans scored half-centuries. But Bumrah’s brilliance restricted them to a par total in this high scoring venue.
In response, India lost Rohit early but Rahul played a gem of a knock and scored 56 off 27 deliveries. Kohli missed out on few chances until Guptil took a stunner. With more than 10 runs per over needed, young Indian middle-order rose up to the occasion as Iyer scored a brilliant 29 ball 58 and credited with Man of the Match award.
India's previous highest successful overseas chase had come on July 8, 2018, when they chased down England's 198 in Bristol. The second New Zealand-India T20I will take place on Sunday.
