Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as Punjab Minster
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said that he has sent his resignation as a Punjab Cabinet minister to CM Captain Amarinder Singh and it has been delivered to his official residence. Sidhu had earlier submitted his resignation letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi instead of CM Singh. In June, Sidhu's portfolio was changed after a Cabinet reshuffle.
After Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as Minister from Punjab Cabinet, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said, "I have no issues with him, I had in fact given him a very important portfolio after the reshuffle. It was his decision to quit the Cabinet." "I will go through his resignation letter and then see what is to be done," he added.
There have been mixed reactions on the resignation of Siddhu. Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha on Sunday took to Twitter to say that he was appalled to learn of Navjot Singh Sidhu's resignation from the Punjab Cabinet. Sinha said, "He has been a...talented and popular sportsman/politician...a wonderful human being and...a dear friend." "[W]e cannot question his decision, one would...pray for remedial measures soon towards...this unfortunate move," he added.
On the other side, Union Minister Som Parkash said that it was good that Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as Cabinet Minister from CM Captain Amarinder Singh-led government in Punjab. He added, "It's the first time in the country that a minister's portfolio was changed and he resigned." In June, Sidhu was given Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources portfolios after a Cabinet reshuffle.
