President Ram Nath Kovind has said rape convicts under POCSO Act should not have the right to file mercy petition. Adding that women safety is a serious issue, President Kovind said, "Parliament should review mercy petitions."
The comment comes after all four accused in the Hyderabad rape and murder case had killed in an encounter today. He was speaking at an event at the headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris in Rajasthan’s Sirohi.
"Women’s safety is a very serious issue. A lot of work had done on this subject but much remains to do. Incidents of the demonic attack on girls shake the conscience of the country. It is the responsibility of every parent to instill among boys the feeling of respect for women," Kovind said.
The President stressed that a society based on equality and harmony could only be possible by empowering women.
