Are engineering degrees losing sheen? One might answer in the positive looking at the educational profiles of 597 recruited forest guards, who have completed their six-month apparatus training at Tamil Nadu Forest Academy in Coimbatore.
 
257 of the 597 recruited forest guards in Tamil Nadu are engineers, who hold a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees. About 150 recruits have Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. The recruits completed their six-month apparatus training at Tamil Nadu Forest Academy in Coimbatore.
 
The least qualification for forest guards is Plus-Two with an age limit of 21-30. Forest guards are foot soldiers, forming an integral part of protection.
 
Besides engineers, there are people with a science background. About 150 recruits have BSc and MSc. There are a few with MBA, M Phil, B. Pharm, and B Com as well. 190 of them are women and this is the first time that the department has recruited women guards.
