Voting begins in 13 seats in the 1st phase of Jharkhand assembly elections

The Jharkhand elections scheduled to hold in five phases, with the final phase taking place on December 20, and the results will get announced on December 23.

Voting begins in 13 seats in the 1st phase of Jharkhand assembly elections

Thirteen constituencies in six districts of Jharkhand on Saturday went to Assembly polls in the first phase. A total of 189 candidates are contesting in the first phase. Seats for which polling is taking place are Chatra, Gumla, Bishunpur, Lohardaga, Manika, Latehar, Panki, Daltonganj, Bishrampur, Chhatarpur, Hussainabad, Garhwa, and Bhawanathpur.
 
A 3.7 million-strong electorate, including 1.8 million women and five transgender voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise and will decide the fate of 189 candidates, including 15 women, in the first phase. Of the total candidates, 44 are facing criminal charges according to their affidavits, 59 are crorepatis.

Prominent candidates in the fray are BJP nominee and Jharkhand Health Minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi and Jharkhand PCC president and ex-IPS officer Rameshwar Oraon. Oraon is taking on the ex-PCC chief and sitting legislator Sukhdeo Bhagat after the latter joined the BJP recently.
