The BAFTA Film Awards have announced their longlists in 24 categories and RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli, has received one nomination for Film Not in the English Language. All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin top the charge with 15 and 14 longlist nods, respectively. All That Breathes, a documentary by Shaunak Sen, has also found mentioned. Meanwhile, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's historical drama Gangubai Kathiawadi has received no nominations. The film has been lobbying for BAFTA nominations since last month.
The British Academy announced its longlist in a new tweet with the caption, "The wait is over! Check out the longlist for the 2023 #EEBAFTAs. Who would you like to see nominated on Thursday 19th January?" The 76th edition is set to take place next month.
The lack of nominations for Indian films is surprising. It is so because of the love both RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi, as well as its lead Alia Bhatt, have gotten in recent weeks. The BAFTAs are a prelude to the Oscar nominations. The Oscars will air live later this month on January 24. Thus heightening the intrigue over whether any Indian films, particularly RRR, would break through with a few nods or not.
According to Variety, the longlists are from the votes cast during the Round 1 period, which ended on December 30. Those named today to the longlist will advance to Round 2, which will conclude on January 13. The final nominees will be announced live by actors Hayley Attwell and Toheeb Jimoh on January 19. The awards presentation will be on February 19 at London's Royal Festival Hall.
