Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Deepika Padukone is growing steadily at the box office since its modest start earlier last week. The film opened to a decent Rs. 4.77 crores on Friday and went on to earn Rs. 6.90 crores on Saturday. Post Sunday the film's total collection turned up into Rs. 19.02 crores. On the first Monday since its release, Chhaapak did a total collection of almost Rs. 5 crores.
Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that "#Chhapaak slips on Day 4... Biz is limited to a few premium multiplexes of urban centers... Continues to non-perform at Tier-2 and 3 cities and also mass belt... Fri 4.77 cr, Sat 6.90 cr, Sun 7.35 cr, Mon 2.35 cr. Total: ₹ 21.37 cr. #India biz."
The film has expectations to earn around Rs. 30 crores before the first weekend. Chhaapak has received tough competition on the big screen from Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan's Tanhaji which has done much better collections. In smaller cities, Chhaapak has also had issues dealing with BJP supporters who boycotted the film as Deepika earlier supported JNU's student protests.
The film bases on the real-life story of Laxmi Agarwal and takes a stand against all the acid attack instances that happen around the country. Kangana Ranaut earlier also came out in support of the film as she said that it is an incredibly empowering film and everyone should watch it.
