Frozen 2, a sequel to the popular animated feature Frozen (2013) had earned $350 million in just its opening weekend in which $127 million was from the US.
Until Sunday, the highest-grossing opening weekend for an animated movie belonged to The Lion King (2019) which was the remake of the original Disney film and made $245 million in its opening weekend.
Box Office Mojo states that China’s film lovers are Disney’s biggest international buyers and have given Disney about $1 billion.
The original Frozen itself had made box office history back in 2013 by earning $1.27 billion and collecting $93 million during its first five days in theatres, according to Reuters. Disney chose to open Frozen 2 a week ahead of Thanksgiving so that it will get a significant rise in revenue from when kids have holidays during Thanksgiving.
Critics have praise for Frozen 2 but so far it still does not hold a candle to the original 2013 release. Frozen got a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes whereas Frozen 2 is still on 75%.
