Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 2 achieved a worldwide box office gross of more than Rs. 200 crores. Madras Talkies released the update on Monday night via Twitter. It shared a short video with the caption "200+ cr worldwide gross in cinemas worldwide."

The 2022 movie's sequel, Ponniyin Selvan 2, was directed by Mani Ratnam. On April 28, the historical drama debuted in theatres. The five-part novel series of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy is the origin story for the movie. One-third of the novel series was covered in Ponniyin Selvan Part 1, and the next two parts presented the balance of the story. In the second episode of the epic drama that tells the tale of the Chola Dynasty, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, Parthiban, and Vikram Prabhu reprise their roles. The narrative of the movie is voiced by actor Kamal Haasan. For the movie, AR Rahman wrote the music.
Jayam plays the legendary ruler Rajaraja Chola I in the movie. Aishwarya performs two roles: Mandakini Devi and Queen Nandini, the princess of Pazhuvoor who is out for vengeance. Trisha is recognized as Kundavai. The high-profile movie was released internationally in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
The name of the movie franchise is derived from Arulmozhi Varman's other name, Ponniyin Selvan, which translates to "Son of Cauvery". It was a nickname he earned as a child after it was claimed that the great river Cauvery saved him from drowning. Ratnam's Madras Talkies and A Subaskaran's Lyca Productions collaborated to produce the movie.
