Brad Pitt canceled his appearance last minute due to family obligations. So, Margot Robbie, his co-star gave a speech on behalf of Brad Pitt at the BAFTAs.
Robbie was on Good Morning America (GMA) as part of her publicity tour for her new movie Birds of Prey in which she reprises the role of Harley Quinn. She admitted to panicking about filling in for Brad at the show. Due to her nervousness, she forgot to prepare an acceptance speech for herself in case she won.
Robbie said: “He, like the night before, was like ‘Can you do my speech for me? I can’t be there,’ and I was so panicked about his speech that I didn’t even think about preparing one for myself.”
She added: “I was up for two, for both films in my category, and it wasn’t until I was in the car on the way there that I was like ‘Oh my gosh, I hope I don’t win because I don’t have anything to say.”
Robbie got nominated twice in the Best Supporting Actress category, for Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But she lost the Oscar to Laura Dern for Marriage Story. Accepting Pitt's award, Robbie
Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His speech, read by Robbie, said: “Hi Britain, heard you just became single. Welcome to the club. Wishing you the best with the divorce settlement... blah blah blah.” This was his joke at failed marriages and the UK's exit from European Union as Brexit came into force recently. After showing gratitude and thanking the academy and so on, Pitt’s speech cracked another joke, this time about the British royals. Holding up Pitt's BAFTA Award, Robbie said: "Oh, and he says that he is gonna name this Harry ‘cause he is really excited about bringing it back to the States with him. His words, not mine, thanks." The final joke took a dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to spend more time in North America after taking a step back from their duties as British royals.
