British Film Institute Member Says Alia Bhatt Should Be Nominated For Baftas And Oscars

In an Instagram post, Robin Baker of the British Film Institute argued that Alia Bhatt ought to be recognized for her work in Gangubai Kathiawadi at the upcoming BAFTA and Oscar ceremonies. Alia reposted his post on her Instagram Story and expressed her gratitude by including white heart emojis. On February 25, 2022, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's historical drama had its Indian premiere. Throughout the awards season, Sanjay has been promoting the movie. He was in London, England, and Los Angeles, California through the season.

Robin shared on Instagram, "If I was a member of BAFTA or the Academy (I'm not)... this year I would be voting for Alia Bhatt as Best Actress. It will be for her performance in GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India, 2022). She plays a prostitute turned underworld brothel madam turned a campaigner for sex workers’ rights. And the joy of her performance is how she grows as her character develops." Robin urged voters to take Alia into consideration. He urged them to nominate her even though he is not a film academy member.

The head curator at BFI added, "The film is big, brash, sentimental, and hugely enjoyable. And Bhatt is sensational. There's the additional pleasure of the film's classic Hindi cinema references. References range from Gangubai's love of Dev Anand to scenes of cinema-going in the 50s and 60s. It goes to the many film posters lining the streets around Bombay's red light district. If you haven't seen it (especially BAFTA and Academy Award-voting friends), please head to Netflix ASAP." Alia re-shared Robin's post with a series of white heart emojis.

The 76th BAFTA Awards nominations will be revealed on January 19. And the awards ceremony will take place on February 9 in London. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 12. The nominees will be announced on January 24.

A week before it was released in India, Gangubai Kathiawadi had its world debut at the Berlin International Film Festival. It also has Ajay Devgn in a cameo. Raha Kapoor, Alia's first kid, was just born on November 6. Ranbir Kapoor, an actor, is her husband. The duo last appeared together in Ayan Mukerji's fantasy adventure film Brahmstra: Part One - Shiva.
