In the latest episode of Last Week, Tonight with John Oliver, host and comedian John Oliver began once with a grim message about Coronavirus. The show has been filming in a small private space and no longer includes a studio audience. Oliver himself addressed the eerie feeling and said, "I’m shooting this at home, alone, with no one else in the room. So you won’t hear any laughter tonight. Please don’t feel that’s at all awkward— it certainly isn’t for me, though I started comedy doing stand-up in England, so I am more than used to doing jokes to silence.”
Oliver briefly mentions the dire situation that has taken over the whole world and specifically the UK and Spain. Both the two European countries have suffered casualties in thousands since the Coronavirus pandemic broke out. The comedian also mentioned the 21-day lockdown put in place by Narendra Modi in India.
However, Oliver took the biggest dig at President Donald Trump. Donald Trump suggested reopening the American market by Easter which is just two weeks from now. In his response, Oliver said, "It’s worth taking a moment to appreciate just how irresponsible that attitude is.
He added saying, " Because we wasted so much time that we could have spent preparing, the virus is now widespread. And thanks to how we have massively botched the rollout of testing for the virus, we still don’t know how bad things are. So strict social-distancing measures are our best shot at slowing this outbreak.”
The famous late-night show host ended the episode with an optimistic message about all the people who are fighting the virus on the frontlines and especially the doctors around the world. He said that we must acknowledge their work and make their jobs easier in the coming times.
