Madhu Mantena's retelling of the Indian epic is visiting the story from the point of view of Draupadi. Both Madhu and Deepika Padukone
say that it will be significant to incorporate a woman's perspective on Mahabharat into the cinema culture. It will be empowering since Draupadi is a cultural icon in Indian history. Deepika said “While the Mahabharata
is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life's lessons are also derived from the Mahabharata
but most often from its men.” She will also be co-producing the movie with Mantena. Based on her past roles in period films like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, her persona is well suited to play Draupadi.
She is also set to release Chhapaak in January 2020. Chhapaak is a story of bravery based on an acid attack survivor directed by Meghna Gulzaar.
Deepika's fame and sincerity have given Madhu Mantena confidence in producing Mahabharat on a large scale. Deepika herself seems thrilled to be taking on this role. She believes it is the "role of a lifetime." The movie is set to release in segments with the first part to release in Diwali of 2021.
