Director Mari Selvaraj made a glorious debut with his hard-hitting film Pariyerum Perumal. The film which speaks about caste injustice and discrimination starred Kathir, Marimuthu and Kayal Anandhi in lead roles. After being impressed with Pariyerum Perumal, actor Dhanush personally met Mari Selvaraj and signed a film with him. Titled Karnan, the film is said to be on the lines of Pariyerum Perumal talking about a social issue. The shooting of Karnan has been wrapped up in December 2020 and is all set for a theatrical release on April 9th.
On February 14, Dhanush took to social media to reveal that Karnan will release in theatres on April 9. Along with the release date, the makers also revealed a new poster. In the poster, Dhanush looks bruised and his hands handcuffed. We can also see hundreds of people standing behind him. Dhanush wrote, "#Karnan first look and “THEATRICAL RELEASE” date !! (sic)." Earlier, Dhanush appreciated producer Kalaipuli S Thanu for releasing the film in theatres and not on OTT. The film also stars Rajisha Vijayan, Lakshmi Priya and Lal in important roles.
