Directed by Kamalakara Kameshwara Rao, this film features Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, SV Ranga Rao, Savitri, Jamuna and Suryakantam in the lead roles. It was an official remake of 1958 Kannada film Thumbida Hennu. Iconic production house Vijaya Vauhini Studios had bankrolled this family drama. The story of the film revolves around Gundamma, her two children and a step-daughter. More than the story, it is the performances of the leads which took the film to the next level. The music of the film was also a big hit. Composed by Ghantasala, the film had eight songs in total. Songs like Lechindi and Kolo Koloyanna received cult status over the years. Legendary cinematographer Marcus Bartley handled the camera work of this film.
Gundamma Katha opened to a positive response from the audience. Eventually, it became a super hit at the box office. It ran for more than 100 days in 17 centers across erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. The film is often considered as the last hit in Vijaya Vauhini's Gold Age.
