The original Lizzie McGuire series became a fan-favorite on Disney Channel after airing in the early 2000s. It ran from 2001-2004. The series starred Hilary Duff as the lead character as she finds her way through middle school. Accompanying her are her friends Gordo and Miranda. The series also brought in an animated version of McGuire’s character who voices McGuire’s thoughts.

While the show was in the middle of its two-season run, the show released a feature film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie. In the film, Lizzie travels to Rome for a school trip and gets mistaken for an Italian pop star. Luckily, this was not the last time fans saw Lizzie and her gang since the film released before the series finale.

At that time, Disney was also interested in continuing the story of Lizzie McGuire on the Disney-owned ABC. But, an agreement with Duff never materialised.

Recently, Disney announced a reboot of the series for Disney+, with many original cast members returning. The show completed filming two episodes before Lizzie McGuire's original creator, Terri Minsky, got fired.

Now, Hilary Duff broke her silence on the controversy. She took to Instagram to post about how she believes Lizzie McGuire should be a mature series this time. Her post read. “Was incredibly excited to launch 'Lizzie' on D+ and my passion remains!" The actress wrote in a note, "However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans' relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I'd be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old's journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating." She also added. “It's important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen / teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again."
