Joaquin Phoenix : 'I was living like a hermit because I was on an extreme diet' for his role in Joker

Joker is one of the biggest releases of 2019. That is an understatement. From critics to the audience, the movie was praised by all, more so for Joaquin Phoenix’s remarkable portrayal of one of the darkest villains in the superhero universe. Director Todd Phillips revealed that to attain the body suitable for his role as Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix ate an apple a day for the whole summer.

To do justice to the role of the darkest supervillain in DC, Joaquin Phoenix went through an extreme diet and lost 23 kilos! His diet was so strict that he found it difficult to socialize as he was not eating or drinking properly. He even ended up dreaming about food! He would dream about eating a huge meal and would wake up feeling guilty the next morning. During an interview recently with W Magazine, the actor spoke about his weight loss journey and how it affected his psyche.

Phoenix even refused to take consultation from a nutritionist and other diet experts to lose weight. The actor managed to lose 52 pounds all by himself to take on the role of the lanky Arthur Fleck. Director Todd Phillips recalled being unable to recognize Phoenix by the end of his diet! The 45-year-old actor also revealed that he took dance training to prepare for the character.
