Johnny Depp opens up about alcohol addiction from early years in various interviews

Johnny Depp is among the biggest names in Hollywood. Depp is popular for his versatile roles in different genre movies. He has acted in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Pirates of the Caribbean series, Edward Scissorhands(1990), Fantastic Beasts 1 and 2, etc. However, he has also had a couple of rough years with the lawsuit against him by ex-wife Amber Heard. Though, Depp has also openly talked about his struggles and addictions. On his 57th birthday he talked about his alcohol addiction when he was barely 12! In his interview with People's magazine he revealed his experiences.

At the tender age of 12 he began smoking and soon drinking and using drugs. He said, "Oh, man, yeah. Johnny was unhappy then … It was a pretty dark time for me. I don’t know what was going on. Well, I was poisoning myself beyond belief. I’d eat that glass, man. There was a lot of liquor. A lot of liquor. I was pretty unhealthy.” He continued, "I never wanted to be the guy people looked at,” Depp told The Boston Globe in 2008. “I felt I could only be myself when I was alone, that I turned into some kind of novelty. The only way I could get through that time was to drink.”

Though Depp admitted that he regretted doing all of that now that he looks back to it. In 2005 he told Rolling Stones, "I spent years poisoning myself, I was very, very good at it. But finally I was faced with a critical decision: Do I want to continue to be a dumba** or do I want to not be a dumba**? It was best to stop. Now I look back and say, ‘Why? Why did I do that?’ ”

He spilled how alcohol was never a fun thing for him. “I never had that. It was never about recreation. Not. Ever. That was never my motivation,” said Johnny. He also informed how he stayed away from hard drugs. "I was never a cokehead or anything like that, I always despised that drug. I thought it was a waste of time, pointless. But I was poisoning myself with alcohol and medicating myself. I was trying not to feel things, and that’s ridiculous” he admitted to The Chicago Tribune.

Depp's stardom has surely taken a hit. His performances are now undermined and unacknowledged. One of the highest-paid actors in the world isn’t as popular as he once was.
