Journalist Siddique Kappan's bail plea was adjourned. The Lucknow District Court reversed the bail plea in the Enforcement Directorate's case. The case adjourned when mourning was announced following the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The bail plea will be heard again on Wednesday.
The bail proceedings of Siddique Kappan, who was jailed in the UAPA case, have been completed. Former VC of Lucknow University and social activist Roop Rekha Verma and Riyasuddin, a native of Lucknow, stood surety for Kappan. The condition was that for each lakh rupees, two sureties from UP residents be provided. Roop Rekha Verma posted bail with his own car. Roop Rekha Verma was prepared to stand bail after knowing that the proceedings were being delayed due to the non-availability of sureties who were natives of UP. But he can be released only if he gets bail in the ED case as well.
Supreme Court had granted bail to Siddique Kappan, who was jailed under the UAPA by the UP government. A bench headed by Chief Justice UU Lalit granted bail on the grounds that the evidence found by the UP Police was insufficient. The bail was on the condition that the captain should stay in Delhi for the next six weeks. However, Siddique Kappan can be released only if he gets bail in the case registered by the ED.
On October 5, 2020, Siddique Kappan was arrested on the way to the place where the girl died as a gang-rape victim in Hathras. Siddique Kappan, who was traveling with Popular Front activists, was arrested by the UP Police under UAPA on the grounds that he had tried to riot. Then Kappan was arrested under UAPA and other sections, and he has been in jail for 22 months. Kappan reached the Supreme Court after the Mathura Court and the Allahabad High Court rejected his bail plea.
