Kamal Haasan Calls Hey Ram As An Apology To Mahatma Gandhi

Kamal Haasan recently joined Rahul Gandhi in his Bharat Jodo Yatra. As an extension, the two sat down for a conversation in which they spoke about Hey Ram.

Speaking to Gandhi in a free-flowing conversation, Kamal Haasan said, "My father was a Congress man, but my environment made me a bitter critic of Gandhiji when I was in my teens. Around 24-25 I discovered Gandhiji on my own, and over the years, exponentially, I have become a fan." He furthere added that he made the film of Hey Ram, a functional story of as an assasin who wanted to kill Mahatma Gandhi. However, when the assasin gets closer to Mahatma, he changes his his mind and aplogise. He further added, "The worst form of criticism is an assassination, I think it's very cheap."

In an throwback media interaction, Kamal said, "Finding Gandhi was a personal journey. I'm nobody's bhakt. There was so much halo around him, so I wanted to see the face behind it and I did find it. When I saw the photos of Gandhi and Nehru talking, I seriously wished I was there. In 2000, I didn't have any idea about coming to politics. But, if you watch the film, you could see I wanted to. Politics isn't a game where a person is clever. It is about doing something inimitable by lesser people. It's about being honest. Many say that Hey Ram came ahead of time. But, it should have come earlier than 2000."
