Kollywood Box-Office: Dull Days for Tamil Cinema

2020 opened on a good note for Tollywood as we saw two big blockbusters in the form of Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. These two films have done a combined business of Rs. 300 crores at the box-office. On the other side, Kollywood has seen a contrasting experience at the box-office. Only one biggie has got released this year, which is Rajinikanth's Darbar. Even though the makers have claimed it as a hit, recently the distributors have confessed that it was a loss venture. It has been a month since Darbar has hit the theatres and the Tamil industry is still waiting for that big success.

Last Friday, two Tamil films have hit the theatres, which are Jiiva's Seeru and Sarathkumar's Vaanum Kottattum. Both films aren't having any great run at the box office. The collections over the weekend were pretty much average. In Chennai city, Seeru collected a total of Rs. 56 lakhs in the first three days. Vaanum Kottattum had a slow start but picked from the second day. On the whole, it collected Rs. 55 lakhs. Next place got grabbed by Hollywood release Birds of Prey. After that, Mysskin's Psycho and 1917 remained at the top charts of the Chennai box-office.
