K-Pop Band EXO's Suho goes Solo

EXO is a K-Pop band based in Seoul, South Korea. One of the band's members, Suho released his first solo album titled, “Self-Portrait."

“As a solo artist, I wanted to make music that captured the color and musicality of Kim Jun-myeon (Suho’s given name), not the one I had shown through EXO as a group. I do feel burdened, but excitement outruns nervousness,” Suho said in a statement. He seeks to make music that reflects himself rather than the band. Hence the title Self-Portrait.

The self-Portrait is a 6 track album. The lead track "Let's Love" plays like a modern rock track. The song expresses a desire to keep loving someone despite all efforts and struggles. Commenting on the song, Suho added, "Just like every other song, ’Let’s Love’ will offer listeners different feelings depending on their mood and the time of day. It’s a feel-good, relatable song that touches upon the general aspect of love."

The album also features tracks “O2,” “Starry Night,” “Self-Portrait” and “For You Now." All of the tracks were written by songwriter Younha in collaboration Suho. Even though the songs appear to have a common story of love, the lyrics reflect on his experiences and the emotions he felt during his eight years as a celebrity.

Suho has had complete control over the album. As in every little aspect of the album - from the lyrics to the album art. The musician has said that the album art was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famous “Van Gogh Self-portrait." The cover also features a portrait of Van Gogh as a tribute.

“Self-Portrait” was released at 6 p.m. KST on March 30, 2020.

Suho is the fourth member of EXO to go solo, following Chen, Baekhyun and Lay.
