Lewis Hamilton, a 6-time Formula 1 World Champion won the 2020 Laureus Sports award. He shared this prestigious honor with Lionel Messi. This award is also referred to as the Oscars of the Sports world.
This award is for World Sportsman of the Year. He nominated before but had never won. This was his 6th nomination and he took home the award sharing the stage with Lionel Messi. This is the first time a footballer won the award. Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel are the only other two Formula 1 driver who has received this award. This made Hamilton only the third driver in the world to achieve this award. This is the first time two people received the World Sportsman of the Year award. It made a new history in the history of this awards ceremony.
The other people nominated alongside Hamilton were 6-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, Tiger Woods, tennis star, Rafael Nadal and marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
Simon Biles won her 3rd Sportswoman of the Year award. Last year, she won 5 medals for the world gymnastics championship at Stuttgart. In his award-winning speech, Hamilton stated that there needs to be more diversity and inclusivity in the field of sports. He stated, "But I've grown up in a sport which has little to no diversity. It's an issue we are facing. It's all our responsibility to use our platform to push for gender equality and inclusivity. We have to make sure we are engaging and representing what the world is today."
