During this lockdown, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting decided to re-telecast some of the iconic shows of Indian Television. Two of them are Ramayan and Mahabharat. While Ramayan got created by Ramanand Sagar, Mahabharat got directed by BR Chopra. Veteran actor Gufi Paintal played the role of Shakuni in Mahabharat. The actor recently revealed that he used to be an Army man before venturing into acting.

Gufi Paintal revealed his Army journey during a recent interview with Dainik Bhaskar. The actor said that he was pursuing engineering in 1962. At that time, India was in war with China. The Indian Army was looking for new recruits. Gufi came across the news and enrolled himself for the recruitment. He then got selected in the Artillery Department. Gufi's posting was at the Indo-China border. Gufi stated that they don't use to have a television or a radio in their camps. Thus, the army men used to pass time by enacting Ram-Leela. Apparently, Gufi used to play the role of Sita every time.

Gufi also revealed that his parents used to be in Lahore. They shifted to Delhi during partition. After relocating to Delhi, Gufi's father started a studio there. Gufi used to be keen on acting right from his childhood. Upon his cousin's suggestion, Gufi came to Bombay. He then worked as a casting director for Mahabharat.

He selected three members to play the role of Shakuni. But the writer of the show, Rahi Masoom Reza found Gufi as a suitable candidate for that character. Thus, he had cast Gufi for that iconic role.
