Netflix has released the trailer for its hotly anticipated eight-episode series “The Witcher,” which the streaming giant will drop Dec. 20. The fantasy and magic-laden show star Henry Cavill as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as the young princess Ciri, and Anya Chalotra as sorceress Yennefer.
The trailer’s debut teased a day earlier on the official Twitter account for the series, which posted a brief montage of scenes with rhyming verse. The series will be an adaptation of The Witcher books, not of the video game franchise.

Based on the dark fantasy series of the same name by novelist Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher casts Man of Steel star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter struggling to find his place in a world populated by dangerous supernatural creatures and humans who can be just as evil — if not more so. The series will follow Geralt’s adventures as his fate becomes linked with a tremendously powerful sorceress and a young princess who harbours a dark secret. The trailer debuted to widespread acclaim from fans of the Witcher books and the video game series, with particular praise for short glimpses of the show’s fight choreography.
Hissrich actually said no to the project at first when she was initially offered it. Once she began thinking through the kind of adaptation of the books that she would want to see, she began to imagine this being a show she could actually make, at which point she pressed ahead.
Netflix released an early preview of the series in July during Comic-Con International in San Diego.
