Ozark is one of Netflix’s most popular shows. When it first premiered in 2017, it was compared to the hit show Breaking Bad. The show follows the story of a financier Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman. He moves his family to a small town called Ozark to ‘wash money’ i.e. turn black money into white money for a Mexican drug cartel. The third season was released on 27th March and the good reviews have already flooded in. It has been hailed a “binge-worthy” series.
In the third season, Marty Byrde continues to launder money and is living life on the edge. He does so using a casino as a front for his illegal activities. The third season intensifies the ruthlessness that Marty Byrde and his wife Wendy (played by Laura Linney) that employ to keep afloat and safe from the Cartel. The season’s other major storyline is centered around Wendy’s brother Ben. Ben starts dating Marty’s right hand Ruth (Julia Garner). This storyline intensifies as Ben starts to question Marty’s loyalty to her.
Amidst all this chaos, Marty has to face of Helen (Janet McTeer), his drug kingpin’s attorney and an FBI agent (Jessica Frances Dukes) at the same time. The show will essentially leave the viewer to guess what other crisis will Marty has to deal with next.
Ozark premier as a rather subtle “everyday life” show. However, through the seasons the show has transformed into a tale of survival that pushes the protagonists to heights of criminal ruthlessness. Additionally, all this chaos is set amid a familial backdrop. This is what makes it a great show. Make sure to tune in to binge-watch the show!
