The increase in ticket charges is considered to be the main reason for the decrease in audience size in theatres. But they don't hesitate to pay for movies that offer a better theatrical experience. The same is true in Kerala. While most of the Malayalam films are facing huge flops, some big-canvas foreign-language films have raked in money from here in recent times. Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 2 is now repeating that success.
One of the most anticipated films in recent Indian cinema, PS2, hit theatres on Friday, April 28. In Tamil Nadu, early morning shows were denied permission, but the first shows in Kerala started at four in the morning. The film has the best opening from here. According to various box office trackers, the film earned 2.82 crore from Kerala on its release day. The collection is 2.42 crores on Saturday, 3.05 crores on Sunday, and 2.35 crores on Monday. That is 10.64 crore gross earned from Kerala in the first 4 days. This feat by PS2 comes at a time when Malayalam films have been struggling to find audiences in recent times.
Meanwhile, the film is getting a good response in all the markets where it has been released. The makers have informed that the film has collected more than Rs. 200 crore from the global box office in the first four days of its release. Poniyin Selvan 1's lifetime gross was Rs. 492 crore. It remains to be seen whether the second part will break it.
