The movie, which is based on a classic novel written in Tamil by Kalki Krishnamurthy and is set in the 10th century, is focused on the early years of the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola, who was the most powerful ruler in South India at the time and afterwards known as Chola Prince Arunmozhi Varman. Tamil was the original language of the book. He is renowned for reestablishing the Chola empire's dominance and making sure it kept control of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.
