Lijo Jose Pellissery's film Jallikattu is a highly acclaimed film. The film, notable for its theme and presentation, was selected for the Best Foreign Film Sound Editing competition category of the 68th Golden Reel Awards.
Now, sound designer Ranganath Ravi has revealed that recording the sound of the buffalo in the film was challenging.
"Recording the sound of buffalo in Jallikattu was very challenging. Buffalo is a very silent creature. Even if violent, the sound will be low. I was near it for hours to hear the sound of the buffalo. Still it didn't make a sound. All I got was a growl or two. The sound of a violent buffalo can never be recorded. In fact, other sounds were used in that movie besides the sound of the buffalo. It will not be said that they are the same;" Ranganath said in an interview with Mathrubhumi.
The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. The plot of the film follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village. Following this, the entire village men gather to hunt down the animal.
Jallikattu was the third Malayalam film after Guru and Adaminte Makan Abu to be chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars. It was included in The Hindu's top 25 Malayalam films of the decade. Jallikattu is widely regarded as one of the defining movies of the New Wave Movement.
