According to Us Weekly, the couple was first seen together in June 2017. The 31-year-old duo had kept their relationship private, but Rihanna had opened up about the romance in June 2019 with Interview magazine. Rihanna admitted at the time that she was in love with Jameel, but did not want to bring up any plans of marriage. “Only God knows that girl, we plan and God laughs, right?" she had said.
In February 2019, the duo got spotted celebrating Rihanna's birthday at the Lakers game in Los Angeles where they cheered on the home team.
In August 2019, Rihanna even brought her family members for dinner with Jameel. Her mother Monica Braithwaite, her brother, and the couple dined at a restaurant in Santa Monica. When Rihanna appeared in a video interview with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, she addressed speculations on whether she was expecting her first child in October 2019. Wintour asked the artist, "Rihanna, do you hope to have a baby soon?" To which Rihanna replied, "I don't think about stuff like that. But, I don't know ... God's plan. I look forward to all of the pregnancy rumors after this interview."
Before this, Rihanna was in a relationship with Chris Brown who is a known abuser and jailed several times for legal conflicts. Jameel married to art critic Lina Lazaar from 2012 to 2017.
