There have been ups and downs in terms of movies playing in theaters this year. But the South's film industry flourished, and how. The enormous support for SS Rajamouli's blockbuster RRR from both the nation and the West was indeed something to behold. Consequently, when the Film Federation of India passed on RRR as India's official entry for the Oscars in 2023, it undoubtedly sparked a lot of online debate among critics, the media, and trade. However, according to the U.S. distributor, the team will launch a full-fledged campaign for the action drama and will phone 10,000 Academy members to ask them to consider casting a vote for the movie in every category.
The multi-starrer will be nominated in several categories, according to a Variety report, including Best Picture, Best Director (S.S. Rajamouli), Best Lead Actor for Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, Best Original Song for "Naatu Naatu," and Original Screenplay (S.S. Rajamouli and V. Vijayendra Prasad). Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn were given supporting roles, with M.M. Keeravaani providing the original score. They will also compete for technical categories like sound and visual effects, makeup and hair styling, production design, film editing, costume design, and cinematography.
According to Dylan Marchetti, president of Variance Films, “Over the last six months, we have seen the joy that S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR has brought to global audiences. We have seen the film gross over $140 million worldwide to become one of India’s highest-grossing films of all time and become the first film in history to trend globally on Netflix for over 14 weeks. The film filled up theaters with cheering audiences months after its initial release, including the historic TCL Chinese IMAX theater in Hollywood, where it will play next Friday to an audience that sold out of one of the largest theaters in the country in just 15 minutes. Most importantly, we have heard fans from around the world tell us that they believe this is one of the best films of the year from any nation. We agree. We proudly invite the Academy to consider ‘RRR’ in all categories.”
On Tuesday, it was announced that the Gujarati film Chhello Show (Last Film Show) would be the official entry. Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval, and Paresh Mehta all play significant roles in the movie, which is directed by Pan Nalin. In 2021, the film had its global premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. At the 66th Valladolid International Film Festival in 2021, it also took up the Golden Spike award.
RRR, an action drama with multiple stars including Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt, is one of the most well-liked Indian movies of the year. The movie combines the best acting, action, visual effects, and artwork with a plot that thrilled viewers in India and around the world.
