The action film Shamshera, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor along with Ronit Bose Roy and Saurabh Shukla in significant roles, was released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday. The movie, which was produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Karan Malhotra, is the fourth from the license agreement with Yash Raj Films (YRF) to be released on Prime Video. The others are Bunty Aur Babli 2, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Samrat Prithviraj.
The release of the movie via OTT platforms was approved by the Delhi High Court, but only if Yash Raj Films deposited Rs. 1 crore with its registry by August 22. The judge Jyoti Singh issued the ruling. A lawsuit was brought by Bikramjeet Singh Bhullar, who claimed that the movie violated his copyright for the book "Kabu na chhadein Khet."
Indian Express quoted the court as saying, “Considering the totality of the circumstances as well as the fact that the impugned film has already been released in theatres and is scheduled to be released on the OTT Platforms tomorrow i.e. 19.08.2022, in my view, in order to balance the equities between the parties, at this stage, it would be appropriate to permit Defendant No. 1 to release the impugned film “Shamshera”, on the OTT Platforms, subject, however, to Defendant No. 1 (Yash Raj Films Pvt Ltd) depositing a sum of Rs.1 Crore with the Registrar General of this Court, latest by 22.08.2022,”
According to Live Law India, the court stated, "It is made plain that if the money is not submitted within the time allowed by this Court, an injunction shall operate against future telecast of the film on the OTT Platforms with effect from 23.08.2022.
Ranbir Kapoor plays both Shamshera and his son Balli in the family-friendly action and comedy movie Shamshera. A warrior tribe is imprisoned, sold into slavery, and subjected to torture in the fictional city of Kaza by the brutal dictator Shudh Singh. Shamshera is renowned in his tribe for his tenacious pursuit of their freedom and honor.
Shamshera, a show with a larger-than-life premise, is now accessible to viewers worldwide on the service. The movie is also available in Tamil and Telugu language dubs in addition to Hindi.
