Suriya has once again proven to be the only Tamil actor who is optimistic on the OTT front. The decision is after the success of last year’s Soorarai Pottru, directed by Sudha Kongara. If deciding to release Soorarai Pottru directly was a desperate move, this year’s choice to put four of his projects on OTT was even more desperate.
All the films will release with Amazon Prime Video. Thus it appears to be a more confident choice considering the potential influence on both his career and the business. Jai Bhim, Udanpirappe, Oh My Dog, and Rame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum are the four films. The most significant of these is the OTT release of Jai Bhim, which stars the actor himself. Tha.Se.Gnanavel is directing it, and it will be released in November.
Only three major Tamil stars (Suriya with Soorarai Pottru, Dhanush's Jagame Thandhiram, and Nayanthara's Mookuthi Amman) have shifted their focus to the direct to OTT space. Even the release of Soorarai Pottru was not a smooth one. The actor had to face serious backlashes from theatre owners and producers.
In a press note, the actor writes, “Given unprecedented circumstances, we innovated on different models of release. Amazon emerged as the chosen streaming service for 2D’s latest film launches. From Ponmangal Vandhal to Soorarai Pottru, these beautiful tales found audiences and resonance not just in India, but across the world. We are happy to take this collaboration even further.”
