The director was responding to Anupama Chopra's question at the Filmmakers Adda organised by Film Companion. Lokesh says that his favourite film in 2022 is Khalid Rahman's Thallumaala, starring Tovino Thomas. "The film I wish I could make is Thallumaala. I watched this movie two or three times in a row. I like its edit button. I felt it was my style of film. I felt that such a film could have been made;" said Lokesh. Lokesh Kanagaraj said that he had felt the same way about the film Ayyappanum Koshiyum earlier.
Thallumaala is one of the successful films of this year in Malayalam. This film made waves among the young audience due to its innovative treatment and visual beauty. Even after its theatrical success, the film was released on Netflix as an OTT release. The film Thallumaala created a lot of discussion on social media. The film was released in theatres on August 12 and grossed 71.36 crores. Tovino's role in the film was much appreciated by the audience.
