28 years ago my mother-in-law gave me Rs.5000. With that money, I started a crap-selling business. During the period 1974-76, I used to sell nuts in a Chennai theatre. While watching movies there, I also wanted to do a movie. In 1974, the film 'Kannapanunni' was playing in Chennai. The ticket was 50 paisa that day. I went 14 times but didn't get a ticket. It was the 15th time I got the ticket. But when the interval came, I thought the film was over and left. Ever since then, I have had the desire to make a film. I found the right person for that. John is really like my cousin. There is no agreement between us to date. My wish was to make a film based on Kochi. Everyone asked me whether it would be successful if I did it with new faces. I said that is not a problem for me. I am an aggressive trader. I am a person who has done all the work and lived. I don't have much education. I still know Kochi. I know its people. That's why I made the film that tells the story of Kochi.
Starring Noorin Sharif, Rahul Madhav, and Anish Rahman in lead roles, the film ‘Santacruz’ hit the theatres today (July 1). The film is written and directed by debutant Johnson John Fernandes. The film tells the story of 'Santacruz', a dance troupe based in Fort Kochi.
