The film 'Vaariyamkunnan' to be directed by Aashiq Abu is in limbo. Prithviraj Sukumaran and director Ashiq Abu withdrew from the film. Reportedly, Prithviraj and Aashiq Abu had left the film seven months ago. The withdrawal was due to differences with the film's producers.
Producers and screenwriters have not commented on whether the film will go ahead with another team in the event that Ashiq Abu and Prithviraj Sukumaran withdraw.
Compass Movies and OPM Cinemas, led by Aashiq Abu and Rima Kallingal were the film’s producers.
Initially, Anwar Rashid was set to direct 'Vaariyamkunnan' with Vikram in the lead role. The project was later taken over by Aashiq Abu. Anwar Rashid told co-writer Rameez that he had to abandon the project because he wanted more time.
The Sangh Parivar had warned that the film should be abandoned and if released, they would protest. Following the announcement of the film, there was a massive cyber attack on Prithviraj. BJP-RSS leaders had asked Prithviraj to withdraw from the film through social media.
Reportedly, 'Neelavelicham' starring Prithviraj Sukumaran was announced after Aashiq Abu left 'Vaariyamkunnan’. 'Neelavelicham' stars Kunchacko Boban, Rima Leena Rajan, and Saubin Shahir. The makers announced the film on Basheer's 113th birthday.
Harshad and Rameez co-wrote the screenplay for 'Vaariyamkunnan'. Harshad and Ramees are the screenwriters of Mammootty’s ‘Unda’ and ‘Puzhu’. Muhsin Parari was the co-director of 'Vaariyamkunnan'.
