Esmayeel Shroff, a veteran cinema director renowned for films such as Ahista Ahista, Bulandi, Thodi Si Bewafai, and Surya, died today. The director died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital.
Shroff rose to prominence after starring in the popular film Thodisi Bewafaii. This was also his directorial debut. The film, starring Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi, and Padmini Kolhapure, was a box-office success in the 1980s. Moin-Ud-Din, his brother, wrote the script.
Esmayeel was the only filmmaker to collaborate with the late renowned actor Raaj Kumar on four films. The senior actor was challenging to work with. When contacted, lyricist Samir stated that Esmaeel has been suffering from different health issues for years. Meanwhile, director Suneel Darshan expressed his sadness over the death.
