The victim is a new four-part Tamil anthology that has Venkat Prabhu, PA Ranjith, Chimbudevan, and Rajesh as directors. Only one segment of this anthology, which is streaming on SonyLiv, really works. And because it works so brilliantly, everything else looks insignificant in contrast.
In the middle of a vast farmland, a bust of Buddha can be seen in the film directed by Pa. Ranjith. It appears to be a leisurely afternoon as Guru Somasundaram's character, Guna, irrigates his plot of land. While his lone kid attempts to occupy herself with anything she can find in the field, he is toiling away dutifully in the heat. She ascends the burst, sits on Buddha's shoulders, and tries to fly. Her father was enraged by such sight. He commands, "Get down from the god." Kema, the daughter, is a tough cookie. She responds, rolling her eyes at her father, "Daddy, Buddha has said there is no God and you calling him one."
Her father is not in the mood to impart her spiritual lessons. He approaches her from below and commands her to leave the Buddha. Ranjith then pulls back for a wide picture, revealing this lovely scene against the lush green landscape. Buddha is playing with Kema while her father stands next to her. The landscape exudes a lot of purity and tranquility. And when Shekar, played by Kalaiyarasan, a spiteful guy, arrived, everything was about to fall apart. He appears to harbour a long-standing animosity toward Kema and Guna. A minor problem quickly gets out of hand. As a result of a series of unfortunate events, Shekar's throat is sliced during a subsequent fist battle between the two adults. Guna has nothing to do with the incident; it is an accident. However, Shekar's family is not willing to compromise with Guna. They hurry to the scene, blinded by fury and hatred, not to save Shekar but to kill Guna. Ranjith portrays the default human state to lash out and heap on more damage, without any rationality, which is a crucial point, when humans turn into irrational beasts, in the succeeding deeds of complete lunacy.
Mirrange, directed by M. Rajesh, is categorized as a thriller by him. A techie from Bengaluru who is on a business trip to Chennai is the subject of the film.
The next film,"Kottai Pakku Vathalum..Mottai Maadi Sitharum!" by director Chimbudevan is a fantasy drama. The movie takes place during the Covid lockdown when a reporter reaches the end of his tether. A hostage situation appears to be the inspiration for filmmaker Venkat Prabhu's film, 'Confession'. The movie might make viewers think of the thriller Phone Booth from 2002 by filmmaker Joel Schumacher. Confession, however, doesn't do anything to engage us in the story as that movie did.
The victim is currently streaming on SonyLIV.
