The rising number of shows and movies has brought a vast range of content on a viewer's plate but what's getting our attention is the focus that has been given to more women-centric shows. From Queen's Gambit to Emily In Paris, these shows can constantly be seen trending on Netflix, however, there are so many others like them that deserve equal attention. So, here's a list of the top ten women-centric web series on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and others:
Unorthodox:
Unorthodox is a German-American show on Netflix that follows the story of a young Yiddish girl living in Brooklyn who flees her arranged orthodox marriage to live a life of her dreams pursuing a career in music. The synopsis reads, "A woman flees an arranged marriage in Brooklyn to start a new life abroad, then her past catches up to her." Unorthodox is a four-part series on Netflix in which each episode consists of 50 minutes. The show stars Tamar Amit Joseph and Aaron Altaras in the lead roles. It has been directed by Maria Schrader.
Fleabag:
Before we talk about the show, let's take a minute to appreciate the lead, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who's won an Emmys for her comic performance in the show. Phoebe also happens to be a writer of the show and has got much appreciation for the same. It has two seasons, each consisting of five or six episodes. The show is streaming on Prime Video. It's synopsis reads, "A dry-witted woman, known only as Fleabag, has no filter as she navigates life and love in London while trying to cope with the tragedy. The angry, grief-riddled woman tries to heal while rejecting anyone who tries to help her, but Fleabag continues to keep up her bravado through it all."
The Crown:
The Crown is the latest Netflix show which has been gaining much popularity for its controversial revelations about the royal family. It is an award-winning show consisting of four seasons, each having ten episodes of 50 minutes. The synopsis of the show reads, "The Crown chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades' pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century." Talking about the actors, it stars several good performers including Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby, etc.
Yearly Departed:
This perfect comic departure to the year 2020 is depicted by the show. Starring seven outspoken women from different spheres, Yearly Departed is the latest release on Amazon Prime Video which just has one episode streaming now. The synopsis reads, "Comedy special features eulogies for the year 2020 with a line-up of all-women comedians discussing everything from casual sex to beige Band-Aids and everything in between that we've "lost" in 2020." It stars Rachel Brosnan, Sterling K. Brown, Sarah Silverman, Natasha Leggero, Tiffany Haddish, etc.
Bridgerton:
Bridgerton is an American show that recently dropped on Netflix. A period drama set in ancient London where the royal families struggle to find the perfect suitor for their daughters. The show is an eight-episode series, each consisting of around 50 minutes. The synopsis reads, "It is based on Julia Quinn's novels set in the competitive world of Regency London high society's town during the season when debutantes are presented at court." The leading actor, Phoebe Dynevor, plays the eccentric role in the show, who like other women in her town, doesn't succumb to male domination and believes in taking her own decisions. It is a must-watch for someone who likes a sweet fairy tale romance mixed with strong modern-day opinions.
Virgin River:
Virgin River is an interesting release on Netflix which depicts the life of a nurse named Melinda. The show has two seasons with ten episodes each. The synopsis reads, "After seeing an ad for a midwife, a big-city nurse moves to the redwood forests of northern California, where she meets an intriguing man." The impressive star cast of the show consists of Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, etc.
Unbelievable:
Starring Kaitlyn Dever in the lead role, Unbelievable is a heart-wrenching story of a girl's struggle in finding her sexual offender. Its synopsis reads, "When a teen reports being raped, then recants her story, two female detectives follow evidence that could reveal the truth; based on a true story." The show is an eight-episode series streaming on NETFLIX with each episode of 45-55 minutes. The show has been directed by Susannah Grant and is based on a true story. We highly recommend you to watch this show if you're a fan of dramas in which a woman takes the center place.
Queens Gambit:
Queen's Gambit is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. The inspiring tale of a teenage orphan girl who makes her career in the game of chess is what keeps us hooked on the show. The show has a unique storyline that has never been made earlier. It consists of seven episodes, each of 50-55 minutes. The synopsis reads, "Set during the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world." Emily In Paris:
This is a perfect modern-day depiction of a woman's life in the present times. Emily, who finds marketing executive job in France, relocates to a foreign land and makes her place and impact in her workplace. Besides fancy clothes and locations, the show will keep you entertained with its sweet romantic storyline. The synopsis reads, "A young American woman from the Midwest is hired by a marketing firm in Paris to provide them with an American perspective on things." The lead actress Lily Collins has done a great job as Emily. You can stream all the ten episodes of the show on Netflix.
The Wilds:
The Wilds is an American show streaming on Prime Video. This ten episodes series is based upon a bunch of teenage girls who find themselves stuck on a remote island. The synopsis reads, "Teenage girls from radically different backgrounds find themselves stranded on a remote island, unaware they've just become the subjects of an elaborate social experiment." It has only one season with ten episodes. The show stars Mia Healey, Erana James, Rachel Griffiths, Helena Howard, Sophia Taylor, etc in the lead roles and it has been directed by Sarah Streicher.
Masaba Masaba:
This has to be one of my favourites. Masaba Masaba is the show based on the one and only, fashion designer Masaba Gupta. A sweet, comic, and lovable tale about the life of Masaba Gupta, the show has been made in a way that doesn't get too heavy when it shows both the struggles and success stories of Masaba Gupta. It is also a sweet-bitter telltale of mother and daughter relationship, i.e. Neena Gupta and Masaba. Apart from them, the show also stars Kiara Advani, Pooja Bedi, and Shibani Dandekar in the guest appearance. The small six episodes of 25-30 minutes each will give you a perfect binge for the weekends.
Godless:
This limited Netflix series is a revenge drama that keeps women in the centre stage of the show. The synopsis reads, "Notorious criminal Frank Griffin and his gang of outlaws are on a mission -- get revenge on Roy Goode, a former protege who betrayed the brotherhood. On the run, Roy seeks refuge in isolated mining town La Belle, N.M., where he lives with Alice Fletcher, a hardened widower, and outcast. It consists of eight episodes, each lasting for more than one hour
