Everyone is buzzing about the Joker 2 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga because of the huge unveiling last week. A visual teaser for the upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, was released. In it, Joaquin reprises his role as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (after winning his first-ever Oscar for an incredible performance) and Gaga joins the franchise as Harley Quinn. The fact that Joker 2 would be a musical was also revealed.
While there has been much discussion regarding the film's genre, Zazie Beetz, who played Sophie Dumond, Arthur's girlfriend in Joker, believes that Joker: Folie à Deux being a musical genre "makes wonderful sense." When questioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter how she truly felt about Joker 2 being a musical, the Bullet Train actress, said that she "wasn't really shocked by" the artistic choice. Todd Phillips, the director of the Joker franchise, "always had a creative approach to" Arthur Fleck, according to Zazie. Beetz enjoys musicals because she believes that the characters in them are experiencing so much joy and grief that they can only "sing and dance about it."
Zazie Beetz said that she finds "singing and dancing to be quite a cathartic experience." Adding further details, Beetz said: "At one point in my life, I was going through a very, really difficult time, and I just started crying and dancing to myself. And that expression was appropriate for the situation I was in at the time."
After comparing this to Joker 2, Zazie Beetz said, "Arthur, who is feeling and going through a lot, may be seen dancing and singing about it. It makes sense to me since he's the Joker." We wonder if Zazie Beetz, who is a skilled and accomplished actor, would return in the sequel given that the Joker's final shooting screenplay stated that Sophie Dumond, who played Zazie Beetz's role, survived.
