Due to the shut down of the theaters, many films are opting for a direct digital release. The trend is spreading rapidly in the Hindi film industry. Even big-budget films are opting for a direct OTT release. Akshay Kumar's Laxmi Bomb and Ajay Devgn's Bhuj: The Pride of India are some of the big movies that have opted for a direct OTT release. Now, it looks like Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday starrer Khaali Peeli will have a direct digital release. The rights got bagged by Zee5.
According to the sources, the makers were in talks with both Netflix and Zee5. Eventually, the makers opted for the deal proposed by Zee5. Apparently, the streaming platform offered a good price to bag the rights of this movie. Khaali Peeli will be a commercial entertainer directed by Maqbool Khan. It is being produced by Ali Abbas Zafar, who directed films like Sultan, Bharat, and Tiger Zinda Hai. The reports claim that Khaali Peeli is a remake of the 2018 Telugu film Taxiwaala. But the makers are yet to respond to these claims.
Meanwhile, Ali Abbas Zafar is also producing content for Netflix. He will be directing a female superhero flick with Katrina Kaif soon. Apart from that, he will produce a film with Diljit Dosanjh playing the lead role. This movie will get made based on the 1984 Sikh riots. More details about this project will be out soon.
