Guwahati: The government of Assam has demolished yet another madrassa, which the police accuse of having links with Al-Qaeda. This is the third madrasa to be demolished in the state this month. The police explained that these educational institutions were found to be used as centres of terrorist activities. The national media is reporting that the demolition process is due to this. The latest madrasah in Bongaigaon district was demolished by the government.
The district administration used eight bulldozers to demolish the two-storied building of the Markazul Maarif Khariana Madrasa in Kabaithari. Mufti Hafeezur Rahman, one of the teachers of the madrasa, was arrested by the police last Friday. Police allege that Mufti Hafeezur Rehman is a member of Al Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent. After this, the police came with Mufti Rehman and raided the madrasa. Police say that many important documents have been seized from here. In 2018, Mufti Hafeezur Rahman joined the madrasa as a teacher. Yesterday, the District Disaster Management Authority ordered the demolition of the madrasa.
The demolition was ordered on the grounds that various activities were being carried out on a campus with many unspecified buildings, a lack of necessary documents, and non-compliance with conditions. The order states that the structure of the building is dangerous and the demolition is part of mitigating disasters. About 200 students were studying in this madrasa. They were evacuated by the authorities themselves on Tuesday.
