In the last few years, WhatsApp has emerged as the biggest messaging app in India and gained more than 200 million user base. At the same time, the WhatsApp was criticized by the Indian government as the false circulations by the app users led close to 30 mob lynching’s in the country.
So in order to curb the circulation of false news and misinformation via the app, the company has decided to delete around 2 million accounts every month. In a white paper called 'Stopping Abuse' published by WhatsApp, the company revealed it. As part of their new decision, Whatsapp is encouraging its users to report the accounts which are trying to do bulk forwards.
The company which is already restricting Indian users from forwarding more than five messages says: 'We are not here to give people a megaphone, we are here for private messaging' and added 'we discovered examples of hackers rigging hardware to control other accounts at the same time.' If at all WhatsApp's new features have excited you over last couple of years, the company's new decision to delete 'reported accounts' is likely to make them cautious before forwarding a message.
An instance which came to light after WhatsApp introduced 'reporting' to its users is about TDP Rajya Sabha MP CM Ramesh. His account was banned by the instant messaging app after it received multiple complaints on his usage.
