Coronavirus has been spreading like wildfire. The lockdown imposed by the government has left people demanding reruns of the favorite shows. Doordarshan was one of the first to respond.
With the lockdown in place, Doordarshan began the re-telecast of popular shows such as Ramayan due to public demand. Shows like Mahabharat, Shaktiman and Buniyaad are also being re-telecasted. Thus has pushed Doordarshan into being the most watch TV channel in India for this week. The BARC has stated that Doordarshan has had a surge in viewership!
The re-telecast of Mahabharat and Ramayan has resulted in a nearly 40,000% jump in viewership. The traffic is the highest in the mornings and evenings when the two shows air.
Staring with the Mahabharat and Ramayan in the morning shows like Shaktiman, Buniyaad follows suit. Doordarshan produced these shows when it had a complete monopoly in the television sector. These shows are still some of the most popular shows India has produced.
The viewership has been consistent over the last three weeks. There was however, a dip in viewership while people were adhering to the PM Modi's appeal of switching off light for 9 minutes.
Sun TV has also benefited from telecasting classics in the Southern States. Sun TV has also had a surge in viewership. Some Hindi general entertainment channels witnessed a jump.
Sports channels are another kind of TV channels that have seen a surge in viewership. The reruns of the old cricket matches and WWE matches have attracted viewership.
