Has The Government Seen The Need To Censor OTT Content

In India, OTT platforms experienced a two-year golden phase. When the Covid epidemic struck and the theatres were closed, the OTTs became a one-stop destination for entertainment seekers, entertaining both audiences and fans. There has been no halting of the OTT platforms since 2020.

The size and degree of OTT platforms have skyrocketed in the last two years. Platforms that functioned as a substitute for theatres during the pandemic period began to threaten theatres, with industry representatives stating that people began to flock to theatres as a result of the OTTs.

An issue with OTTs that must be addressed is the absence of oversight over nudity and adult content. Many shows have inappropriate content that prevents them from being seen by family audiences. Mirzapur is famed for such events, and with filthy language and sexual scenes, the show became a huge success.

The majority of OTT Hindi shows contain offensive scenes and speech. We've seen how the Hindi online series Tandav, which is available on Amazon Prime, caused quite a stir. The creators apologised for hurting the feelings of a community.

A measure aimed at prohibiting abusive and violent content on OTTs was recently introduced in Parliament House, putting an end to the protracted wait. The measure was introduced in the House by a BJP MP earlier this week. Manoj Kotak, a BJP MP, proposed the bill in Parliament to establish a regulatory authority to investigate offensive and violent material on OTT platforms. The authority would censor OTT material in the same way that the censor board censors films.
