Karan Johar Attributes My Name Is Khan's Success To Shah Rukh Khan; Says, My Name Is Khan Is Among His Career’s Best

My Name is Khan, a movie directed by Karan Johar, turned 13 on February 12. Shah Rukh Khan portrayed the role of a Muslim man from India having Asperger's syndrome in the movie. He goes across the US to see President Barack Obama after the 9/11 terrorist attacks cause his world to come crashing down. The film received praise for its unusual subject matter, beautiful soundtrack, and SRK and Kajol's performances.

My Name Is Khan is widely regarded as one of Karan Johar's best films. KJo recently spoke with ETimes about the movie he directed in 2010. “It stands tall in my oeuvre to this day. If you ask me what made it so special, I’d have to give the credit to Shibani Bathija. This was the first time I surrendered completely to the vision of the writer. And I think we succeeded in bringing a certain heft to my cinema, normally not associated with me.”

My Name is Khan by Shah Rukh Khan left Karan emotionally depleted. “It was two back-to-back serious dramas Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name Is Khan. After these two, I purposely made a candyfloss film like Student Of The Year.” Karan also gave credit to Shah Rukh Khan for My Name Is Khan's success. He revealed, “The volume of research he did on Asperger’s Syndrome, and the time he took off to get the speech and body language right just showed his dedication to the film and role. I rank his performance in My Name Is Khan as among his career’s best along with Chak De (India), Swades, and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa”, he said.

When asked to choose his favourite scene from My Name Is Khan, Karan replied that he enjoyed the part where Rizwan declared his love for Mandira. “The moment on the hill when Rizwan confesses his love for Mandira. I think there is an innocence in their love which no longer exists in any relationship. Love has become just a swipe. What Mandira and Rizwan shared was real and honest.”

Karan further denied considering producing a film sequel. “No, once I tell my story, I move on. I know there was a sequel to my Student Of The Year. But that was not directed by me. So, no. I wouldn’t like to revisit My Name Is Khan. But I hope Rizwan and Mandira have another child by now, and that they have mended their broken marriage.”

My Name Is Khan, which fairly handled a complex subject, earned Karan Johar his second Filmfare Award for Best Director. This film was made in an unorthodox way.

With the upcoming romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, Karan will make a comeback as a director. Along with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, the movie also features Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, and Dharmendra. The movie is scheduled to open in theatres on July 28, 2023.
