Social media is on fire following the release of Prithviraj’s new movie Kuruthi. The film deals with minority communalism, majority communalism and Hindu-Muslim hatred. There are also criticisms that the politics of the film is in favor of the Sangh Parivar. Now Prithviraj is talking about religion being the subject of cinema in the context of Kuruthi. He was speaking in an interview with Anupama Chopra for Film Companion. Anupama Chopra said that religion is discussed in Malayalam cinema differently from other languages and asked how it is possible.
Anupama's question was referring to Malik and Kuruthi. She also said that she would not think about the huge criticism levelled against the film. In response, Prithviraj said that Kuruti was not talking about religion.
Prithviraj replies; “I have not seen Malik. So I can’t comment on Malik. As far as Kuruthi is concerned, I personally do not think that Kuruthi is a film about religion. I just think that religion is one of the facets of the backdrop, against which the story is being told. The narrative has been designed with a structure in mind where an unstoppable force of violence meets an immovable object of faith.
If you remember what would have been our interval card that shot is pretty much the film is. Even if you take religion out of it, if you contextualize it differently, it is about a group of people who when pushed to the extreme, how much can they take before they break. How much do they let themselves go through before their ideals, before what they stand for, stand to crumble?”
Prithviraj added his view toward making films that deal with sensitive subjects like Kuruthi. “As long as there isn’t propaganda I’m okay with it. As long as the film is objective l’m okay with it. And I believe Kuruthi is one of the most objectives takes on a subject like this that I’ve read in the recent past. It doesn’t say one is right and the other is wrong. It just shows you a group of people. It shows their rights and their wrongs. And the film asks you questions. It poses a question against you. It speaks of something that is much bigger than the film;” he added.
Kuruthi is the new Malayalam movie directed by Manu Warrier. The film stars Prithviraj in the lead role. Roshan Mathew also plays a lead role in the new film. Kuruthi is the first solo film produced by Prithviraj Productions. The camera is by Abhinandan Ramanuja.
