Director Mari Selvaraj's Karnan hit the theatres on April 9 amid huge expectation. The film, which is loosely based on the Kodiyankulam riots, brings to light the caste injustice meted out to the people of the village and how the villagers ware denied of their basic rights. Karnan has triggered a debate on social media wabout the whole caste angle where people are arguing whether they have portrayed the truth or intrying to make people remember the gory incident. Recently, Udayanidhi Stalin has watched Karnan and took to Twitter to share in thoughts.

Udhayanidhi wrote that Karnan has portrayed the pain of the oppressed and suppresed people without exaggeration. He also congratulated actor Dhanush, producer Kalaipuli S Thanu and director Mari Selvaraj. However, Udhayanidhi pointed out that there was a factual error in Karnan. The Kodiyankulam riots took place in 1995 when ADMK was in power. However, in the film, it is shown as 1997. Udhayanidhi said that he conveyed the same to director Mari Selvaraj and Thanu about the same and that they have agreed to change the year in two days.
