In a major move, the Andhra Pradesh government renamed Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards’ to ‘YSR Vidya Puraskar’. However, the decision got condemned by the oppositions, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
Interestingly, this comes for YSRCP after facing a lot of criticism for painting their part flag over the national flag. That was highly outraged in social media and the national media also condemned the act.
Even netizens slammed the Andhra Pradesh government. One social media user said, “This is bizarre... Govt has gone completely mindless... Unwanted move, sorry Abdul Kalam Ji...” While other users called it an insult and said, “We can’t allow anyone to insult Kalam Ji.”
“Abdul Kalam is the pride of our nation every student should be inspired by Abdul Kalam. YSRCP doesn’t have respect for Nation last week insulted National Flag.
Then, within hours of issuing a government order renaming “APJ Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskaram” which had given to meritorious students as “YSR Vidya Puraskaram,” the YSR Congress party government restored the original name.
“How can you drop the name of a former President of India and Bharat Ratna A P J Abdul Kalam’s name from the meritorious award without informing me?” Jagan shouted at the officials.
He directed the officials to withdraw the order and retain the name of Abdul Kalam for the award.
He also instructed the officials to name the merit awards after the country’s stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar, Jagjivan Ram, Jyotirao Phule, etc.
